"When it comes to the pecking order of animals, youth definitely has an edge. Fortunately for the older animals, there are people like Karen Scherer."

The above quote is from an article written by Emily Seftel of The Arizona Republic several years ago about me, Karen Scherer. It goes on to tell of my love for senior and special needs animals.

I am developing my longtime dream of starting a sanctuary for these 2 special groups of animals.

Our Mission Statement is simply: Mingus Manor has been organized in order to provide lifetime care and a safe, loving and secure home for senior and special needs dogs and cats, while still able to lead quality lives, that are unable to find a permanent home due to their age, illness or handicaps. These wonderful creatures will receive food, shelter, medical treatment and all the love and attention they need and deserve for the rest of their lives.

The dream has become reality and I'm happy to let you know that we have our facility and it's located in the South Mountain area of Phoenix (see images below). The Sanctuary needs just about everything. We are starting from scratch and only have 1 small building to work with - a chicken coop!!! We need to start building housing for the dogs and cats. We also need people who have knowledge in building, plumbing, electrical work, etc to give input and help to make this a reality.

Because I have chosen to have the Sanctuary for these "love bugs", the estimated cost per month will be $2,000 for housing, food, medical expenses, etc. The Sanctuary is funded totally by donations from the public. If you would like to help with some of these expenses, please donate anything you can, whether it's $5 or $500, through PayPal or by sending a check. If you come out to the facility, bring your pennies and loose change. We will have a barrel setup to throw them in!!! It all adds up and with your help and generosity, the animals will have the BEST for whatever time they have left on this earth.

In the months to come we will be setting up workshops and activities for everyone to enjoy. We will be planting vegetable gardens, composting, having cooking demonstrations, classes on how to make all natural pet treats and a workshop to make memorial stones for your pet. When finished, the stones can be placed in our memorial garden or taken home. If you would like to incorporate some of your pets ashes into this stone, you will be able to do that also.

WE ARE A 501 (C) (3) organization so your donations are tax deductible!!

Please keep checking our website often. Things are moving along at a rapid pace so feel free to drop me a line if you are interested in becoming a part of this on going project. I hope this news makes everyone as excited as I am.

Can we help?

Mingus Manor Animal Sanctuary was recently formed in an effort to help individuals and their senior pets when circumstances become unmanageable due to medical illness, loss of independent housing (moving to a nursing home), and terminal diagnosis. When family and friends can’t take responsibility for a loved one’s pet, we may be able to help.

Our goal is to comfortably house and provide veterinary care (from the top veterinary clinics in the Valley) for all Mingus Manor residents while they enjoy their golden years. We want to dedicate this facility to their lifetime care and offer them the freedom to walk, play and sleep whenever they want.

The following requirements must be met before we can accept your pet:
  • Dogs must be at least 10 years of age to be considered as "senior".
  • Cats must be at least 14 years of age to be considered as "senior".
  • All animals must be spayed or neutered.
  • Special Needs animals will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

With the kind generosity of our friends at Home Depot, plans are being prepared for new housing and care facilities which will allow us to expand our sanctuary for more pets in need. Once this project is complete we will also have the opportunity to assist those individuals needing organ transplants, life threatening surgeries, etc. as they may need assistance with their pets while they recover.

Most importantly, we offer one-on-one attention and lots of LOVE!
